Alternative Waste Treatment (AWT) describes a technology that:

  • Diverts waste away from landfill,
  • Recovers resources from the waste stream, and
  • Minimises the impact on the environment.

AWTs are described as “alternative” because they offer a more sustainable solution than waste disposal methods such as landfill, landfill bioreactors and incineration. AWT can include mechanical separation methods, biological processes, thermal technologies and mechanical biological treatment.

Energy recovery – Waste-to-energy

The energy content of waste products can be harnessed by using the waste as a direct combustion fuel, commonly referred to as Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), or indirectly by processing the waste into an alternate type of fuel. Resource recovery through thermal treatment ranges from using waste as a fuel source for energy or heating, to anaerobic digestion and the use of the gas as a fuel.

We have undertaken investigative projects on two related forms of thermal treatment: Pyrolysis and Gasification. These technologies use waste materials heated at high temperatures with limited oxygen availability. Pyrolysis of solid waste converts the material into solid, liquid and gas products. The liquid and gas can be burnt to produce energy or refined into other chemical products (chemical refinery). The solid residue (char) can be further refined into products such as activated carbon. Gasification is used to convert organic materials directly into a synthetic gas (syngas) composed primarily of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The gas is then burnt to produce electricity and steam.
